High Museum Project

Rob Buddin
Introduction to Art- MW 7-815
Ms. Whittington
High Museum of Art visit

1) Your favorite work of art. What? Why?
The artwork “The Sea of Capri,” by William Stanley Haseltine, made me think of how I love the outdoors and the beach. It also looked like a Caribbean panting in which I have been and would love to go back.

2) A work of art that you like but would not take home. What? Why?
In the Terra Cotta display, there was a coffin built for the emperor. I like the art on the coffin, however, it is not something I would take home for pleasure.

3) A work of taught you something that you did not know. What?
In the painting, “A view of Amsterdam Harbor,” painted by Reiner Nooms, I learned he painted this because he was trying to promote trade to the West Indies as well as other places. The message basically said to use Amsterdam’s ships and you will receive better goods and obtain them faster.

4) A work of art that felt sad to you. What? Why?
In the painting “Results of Poor Housing” made by Hale Woodruff, the title says it all. Everyone looked sad and had no food to eat as well as they were very tired.

5) A work of art that identifies a historic moment in time. What? When?
Kneeling Archer in the Terra Cotta Museum- Qin Dynasty 221-206 BC

6) A work of art that reminded you of something or someone in your life. Who?
In the “Self Portrait,” created by Chuck Close, I was reminded of everyone I knew in my life. Everyone is unique in their own way as well as everyone has different faces. Some depressed and others ecstatic.

7) A work of art that shocked you. What? Why?
I was shocked at how much precision and dedication it took to create these great master pieces.

8) Compare the Folk art gallery and the Contemporary gallery with the rest of the museum. The Folk and Contemporary Galleries were very unique and interesting in there own ways. The Folk Gallery was more of a group of people that decided to start painting without teachers or lessons which make their art works more creative as well as more unique than the Contemporary gallery painters that had lessons and teachers to teach them more proper ways of painting.

9) Describe the part of your High museum experience that was most meaningful to you.
While at the museum, I observed many art pieces and sculptures. The most meaningful thing to me was the Terra Cotta soldier exhibit. This was amazing to me because of the history that was behind each statue. I also knew how, when, and why they were made and I respect the Chinese heritage and history.

My Right Brain, Left Brain

Here is how the right and left parts of the human brain work.

Left Brain:
Sequential Analysis: systematic, logical interpretation of information. Interpretation and production of symbolic information:language, mathematics, abstraction and reasoning. Memory stored in a language format.

Right Brain:
Holistic Functioning: processing multi-sensory input simultaneously to provide "holistic" picture of one's environment. Visual spatial skills. Holistic functions such as dancing and gymnastics are coordinated by the right hemisphere. Memory is stored in auditory, visual and spatial modalities.

Fashion as Art

Behind the scenes with Gen Art fashion designer Bruno Grizzo

In fashion shows, designers use their art imaginations to design different dresses as well as other various types of clothing. Furthermore, the make-up that is worn during the fashion shows is also a work of art in that the make-up is applied to match or compliment the dress that is being worn.

Dancing

"BallRoom" Dancing
The term "ballroom dancing" is derived from the word ball, which in turn originates from the Latin word ballare which means "to dance". In times past, ballroom dancing was "social dancing" for the privileged, leaving "folk dancing" for the lower classes. In the United States, two additional variations—"American Smooth" and "American Rhythm"—have also been popularized and are commonly recognized as styles of "ballroom dance".

Art and the Human Condition

Each of these individual drawings represents the human condition. Some are happy while others are confused. Some have a plan, whereas others play it day by day.

Meet this Artist I know

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (November 24th, 1864 – September 9th, 1901)
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's style was realism and postimpressionism. He was a French painter. Lautrec liked painting people and things he knew. Some other things he liked to paint were posters of nightclubs and paintings of houses.

Art and Human Nature

This ancient cave drawing depicts the art of true human nature.

Art and Human Behavior

The human behavior in most situations of anger or depression is violence; Whether it's just a person getting into a fight or a country going to war.

Art and the Human Struggle

In this painting, there is a woman with her three children as you can see. The mother has just lost her job and now she and her children are on the streets trying to sell flowers just to eat. This is similiar to life today due to people getting layed off because of the economy and struggling to find a way to eat.

Poetry Slam

"Money"

Money can buy costumes but not beauty
Money can buy idols but not devotion
Money can buy books but not wisdom and knowledge
Money can buy bed but not rest and sleep
Money can buy medicines but not health
Money can buy wealth but not health
Money can buy clothes but not shame
Money can buy food but not hunger
Money can buy flowers but not freshness and fragrance
Money can buy land but not home (made of human hearts)
Money can buy honey but not sweetness
Money can buy somethings but not everything
Money can buy luxuries but not happiness.

My Favorite Artist

Henri Rousseau

Henri Rousseau was born in Laral, France in 1844. He served in the French Army and also worked as a toll collector. At the age of 40, Rousseau retired to paint. He also played the violin and gave art and violin lessons. He had no art schooling, but his paintings were admired by other artists of his time, such as Paul Gauguin and Georges Seurat. Seurat's paintings were done in the surrealistic style.

This Music Video is a True Work of Art

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01C4RPEinM4

I feel this is a true work of art because of the animation artworks in the video. This band does not ever appear live, but only in animations such as this song.

I'm Having a Catharsis

It all started when I was placed on probation for obtaining too many speeding tickets. A few months later, after being put on probation, I went to one of good friends birthday party where I had drank a beer or two. The cops showed up and I was arrested for consumption under age. I am now waiting on my court for a violation of probation.

The Art of this Culture

Native American Art

The Native Americans did not just paint like you would normally consider art, however, the native americans made different varieties of artwork. For instance, they carved wooden sculptures, weaved quilts and clothing, as well as made "dream catchers" to keep the bad spirits away at night when they slept.

This Film is a Work of Art

"Sound of Music"

I believe "The Sound of Music" is a work of art because of the way it is a "musical"film. The way the director integrated the songs into the movie made it unique in its own way. Furthermore, the movie has historical meaning and value behind it along with the portayal of the life style during World War II.

I Love this Piece of Architecture

"Roman Coliseum"

I love this exstatic architecture because it was the largest ampitheatre built in the Roman Empire. Its original name was "Flavian Ampitheatre." The huge coliseum was used for gladiator contests, re-enactments of famous battles, public spectacles, and dramas based on classical mythology.

Art on You Tube II

A Collection of Greek and Roman Sculptures
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyIJ9Aq7EMo

These ancient Roman sculptures are very defined and creative. They resemble people with historical value and importance. Even though these works of art are stone and not paint, they are still carefully crafted and designed making them works of art along with the symmetry and relief.

Healing Mandalas
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-_OB5BoRGA

In this video of various artwork slides, the creaters use symmetry and numerous colors. In some of the slides, it is easy to see the different types of relief that have been used. The slides are soothing as well as unique and inventful. I most definately consider the slides in this slideshow artwork.
